Cholera outbreak has been confirmed in Kiryandongo refugee settlement and neighboring areas

Kiryandongo, (UG):– Health authorities in Kiryandongo District have confirmed an outbreak of cholera disease after laboratory tests conducted by the National Reference Laboratories returned positive.

According to a press statement released Tuesday, February 18, 2025, by the District Communications Officer Mr Emmanuel Murungi, four cases have been confirmed so far, while three probable cholera deaths are under intensive investigation.

“The four confirmed cases were identified from Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement and the neighbouring communities in Mutunda Sub-county and Bweyale Town council presenting with Acute diarrhea, Dehydration arising from loss of water and fluids in the body, Vomiting and General body weakness,” the statement read in part.

“As of 18th February 2025, the District has reported three probable cholera deaths and has eight active cases admitted at Panyadoli Health Centre IV,” it added.

The outbreak, authorities say, has affected both the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement and neighbouring communities in Mutunda Sub-county and Bweyale Town Council.

Measures to Contain the Outbreak

In response to the outbreak, the district authorities have implemented strict containment measures, including the immediate suspension of food hawking and vending within the refugee settlement until further notice. The public is urged to adhere to key preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease.

Kiryandongo District authorities have advised residents to:

  1. Boil all drinking water before consumption.
  2. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean water after using the toilet and before eating.
  3. Cook food properly and consume it while still hot.
  4. Wash fruits and vegetables with clean water before eating and peel them where possible.
  5. Avoid consuming cold food or beverages stored in used plastic bottles.

The district leadership has called for increased vigilance and encouraged community members to report any suspected cholera cases to the nearest health facility immediately.
