Mpigi, (UG); The National Unity Platform (NUP) election management committee chairperson Ms Mercy Walukamba and three other committee members are reportedly missing after being abducted at gunpoint from Mpigi last night.
The NUP President, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine confirmed in a Wednesday social media post that Ms Walukamba and her three other colleagues identified as; Rovans Alex Lwanyaga, Rahma Juma, and Kayabura Eddie were arrested at gunpoint by military operatives and are currently in at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) in Mbuya, a Kampala suburb.
“Four members of NUP’s Election Management Committee, Mercy Walukamba, Rovans Alex Lwanyaga, Rahma Juma, and Kayabura Eddie are missing. The available information indicates that they were abducted at gunpoint around Lungala, Mpigi last night as they returned from a burial in Rakai. Onlookers say several other comrades were abducted violently and taken away in drones,” Bobi Wine posted.
“We’re told that the abducted NUP Election Management Committee members are detained incommunicado at CMI Mbuya on the orders of Museveni’s son,” the former Presidential candidate added in a separate post.
According to Bobi Wine, eyewitnesses say the victims were violently dragged into unmarked drones, a method commonly associated with past cases of political abductions in Uganda. Reports also suggest that several other individuals were taken in a similar manner, although their identities remain unconfirmed.
Bobi Wine further linked the incident to recent threats made by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni, against NUP members.
“A few days ago, Gen. Museveni’s son promised to make NUP weep and he is on it. But we can assure him and his father that they are not God. The people of Uganda will have the final laugh!” he wrote.
The abductions come amidst growing reports of government crackdowns on opposition figures and activists, with many NUP supporters previously arrested, tortured, or forcefully kept in prison.
On Monday, Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, Bobi’s brother and Head of Political Mobilization at NUP was allegedly abducted from Kampala at Mulago Kubbiri roundabout, just moments after the opposition party had finished a joint press conference on the fate of jailed veteran politician Dr Kizza Besigye.
By press time, neither the police nor the army had issued any statements regarding the whereabouts of the missing officials, but NUP leaders and human rights activists have called for their immediate release, urging international bodies to intervene and hold the Ugandan government accountable for the continued repression.
The latest development, which adds to the long list of forced arrests and unlawful detention in security facilities further escalates concerns over political repression in Uganda and fuels fears of an intensified wave of political persecution in the lead-up to the 2026 elections.
