Dero Kwan Scholarship urged to prioritize education for poor, vulnerable children

By Owen Odong

Gulu, (UG):- Residents in the Acholi sub-region are calling on the management of Dero Kwan to focus on supporting poor children’s education. This appeal comes after the launch of the Dero Kwan Scholarship, an initiative aimed at improving education in the region.

During an interview with residents at Global Friendship in Gulu City, they stressed the importance of targeting vulnerable children with the Dero Kwan initiative.

Oyo Thomas, a resident of Gulu City, emphasized the need for strict measures to ensure funds are utilized effectively and reach the intended beneficiaries.

Chief Justice Owiny Dollo, who launched the scholarship on February 17, 2025, highlighted its significance in restoring Acholi’s former academic excellence, which was disrupted by decades of armed conflict.

This initiative gives hope to our people. We believe that if these children are supported, they will one day stand in leadership positions to shape the future of our community.”

The Dero Kwan Scholarship is funded by contributions from the Acholi people, both at home and in the diaspora. Ambassador Dr. Olara Otunnu, co-chair of the Rocco Paco Foundation, revealed that approximately UGX 350 million has been raised for the program.

However, some concerns have been raised about the selection process for beneficiaries. Ronald Otim, a businessman in Gulu City, noted that the process lacks transparency and may favor children from wealthy families.

Despite this, Otim acknowledged the initiative’s potential to reduce poverty levels in the region by increasing access to education

Out of the 59 students selected for the scholarship, 20 are girls, making up 34% of the total recipients. However, Amuru, Gulu City, and Kitgum Municipality had no female beneficiaries.

The top-performing student is a boy from Rackoko Primary School in Pader District. The best-performing girl, who achieved an impressive aggregate score of 10, is from Pankwaro Primary School in Gulu District
