Since 1986, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government has made significant strides in transforming Uganda. Despite the opposition’s attempts to tarnish its image, the NRM’s accomplishments speak for themselves.
One of the most notable achievements is the restoration of peace and stability in the country. The NRM government successfully defeated the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels, bringing an end to the insurgency that plagued northern Uganda for nearly two decades. This achievement has enabled Ugandans to live without fear of violence and has paved the way for economic growth and development.
In addition to achieving peace and stability, the NRM government has also made significant investments in infrastructure development. The construction of roads, bridges, and buildings has improved connectivity and facilitated economic growth. For instance, the road network in northern Uganda has been significantly improved, with major roads such as the Atiak-Nimule, Gulu-Acholi Bur, and Acholi Bur-Kitgum-Musingo roads being upgraded or constructed.
The NRM government has also prioritized education, healthcare, and economic empowerment. The introduction of Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) has increased access to education, while the construction of hospitals and health centers has improved healthcare services. Furthermore, initiatives such as the Presidential Skilling Hubs have been established to promote economic empowerment and job creation.
Uganda’s economy has grown significantly over the years. In the financial year 2021/2022, the economy was valued at 148.3 trillion Ugandan shillings, approximately $40 billion US dollars. In the financial year 2022/2023, the economy grew to 184.3 trillion Ugandan shillings, approximately $48 billion US dollars. In the recent financial year 2023/2024, the economy further expanded to 202 trillion Ugandan shillings, approximately $53.3 billion US dollars.
Despite these achievements, the opposition has made several false accusations against the NRM government. One such accusation is that the government has failed to promote democracy and good governance. However, the NRM government has implemented various reforms aimed at promoting democracy and accountability, including the introduction of multi-party politics and the strengthening of institutions such as the Electoral Commission and the Judiciary.
Another accusation is that the government has mismanaged the economy and failed to reduce poverty. However, the facts speak for themselves. Uganda has consistently been one of the fastest-growing African economies, with real gross domestic product (GDP) growing at an average of 6.7% annually during the period 1990–2015, whereas real GDP per capita grew at 3.3% per annum during the same period.
In conclusion, the NRM government has made significant achievements since 1986, and the opposition’s accusations are largely unfounded. As Ugandans, we should be proud of our country’s progress and continue to work together to build a brighter future for ourselves and future generations.
