Man, 55, survives lynching by enraged mob over alleged witchcraft

Butebo, (UG):- The Police in Butebo District Saturday rescued a 55-year-old man identified as Waiswa Sam from an enraged mob that attempted to hack him over allegations of practicing witchcraft in their community.

The incident, which occurred around 3:00 PM on Thursday, saw angered locals storm Waiswa’s home at Bukachera Village, Nasenyi Parish, assaulting him and vandalizing his property.

According to eyewitnesses, Waiswa was targeted for allegedly bringing witch doctors into the community to harm his neighbors. The attack left him with severe injuries, and his house was reduced to rubble.

This is not the first time Waiswa has faced such accusations.

In October 2024, he survived a similar attack in which his home was also destroyed, forcing him to flee to Iganga District for safety. However, upon his return to Bukachera, tensions reignited, culminating in this latest violent assault.

The case of the recent mob justice on Waiswa has been opened up at Kabwangasi Police Station under reference number SDREF: 07/22/02/2025, as a team of officers investigates the circumstances behind the allegations.

Bukedi North Regional Police Commander ACP Mwanga Kitiyo Moses confirmed that Waiswa was rescued from the mob and rushed to Mbale Hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment.

Police have strongly condemned the act of mob justice, urging residents to report suspicions to authorities rather than resorting to violence. They emphasized the importance of due process and warned against taking the law into their own hands.

Investigations into the attack are ongoing, and authorities have vowed to hold those responsible accountable.
