Butambala, (UG):- The Manager of the Office of the NRM National Chairman (ONC), Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, has downplayed the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) as just a minor challenge rather than a significant problem to impact Uganda’s political shape.
Hajjat Hadijah made the remarks on Saturday, February 22, at the introduction ceremony of Hon Faisal Kikulukunyu’s daughter, Ms Rukia, in Butambala District, central Uganda.
Responding to Butambala MP, Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi, who had praised NUP during the event, Hajjat played down the opposition party’s influence, declaring; “NUP is just a challenge but not a problem.”
Namyalo, however, reassured NUP supporters that Uganda operates under a democratic system where leaders are elected through free and fair elections.
Using an analogy of a married woman failing to conceive despite years of marriage, she argued that NUP had failed to convince Ugandans in the 2021 elections, resulting in their loss.
Despite the political differences, the ONC boss said NUP supporters remain Ugandan citizens and are loved by the NRM, and that explains why her office’s continued empowerment outreaches are inclusive for everyone.
The SPA’s comments came against the backdrop of a security crackdown at NUP’s headquarters in Kavule-Makerere and their leadership school in Kamwokya, where hundreds of items and military-like wear were confiscated by security operatives during the search.
The security raid came after disturbing video clips surfaced online showing NUP supporters engaging in what appeared to be militia-like formations while celebrating the birthday of party leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine.
Last week, individual recordings containing threats directed at members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) went viral online, prompting security agencies to take action and one suspect, identified as Musa Wagareiwo was arrested to help with ongoing investigations. Authorities suspect that these videos posed a potential threat to national security, leading to the search at the NUP offices.
The event, which was deeply rooted in Baganda cultural traditions, saw Ms. Rukia introduce her husband in a traditional ceremony, reinforcing the rich customs of Central Uganda.
