Kampala, UG:– Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo has reached another milestone in its rapid rise as a premier sports ground after receiving an official approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host international matches.
The stadium, which reopened to the public on June 1, 2024, has been cleared to host major continental tournaments, including qualifiers and final rounds for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), as well as the men’s U17, U20, and U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Additionally, it will also accommodate preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.
CAF commended the stadium’s state-of-the-art facilities, acknowledging its role in elevating the standards of African football.
This recognition follows a series of international endorsements for Hamz Stadium. In October 2024, FIFA officially certified the stadium’s turf, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino personally awarding the certification. Earlier this year, the facility also earned a nomination for a prestigious global sports award, further cementing its status among top-tier sporting venues worldwide.
Rogers Mulindwa, Chairman of the Hamz Stadium Management Committee, attributed this milestone to the collective efforts of the Ugandan government and the country’s sports leadership. He extended gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni, Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni, State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, and FUFA President Moses Magogo for their unwavering support in elevating Uganda’s football landscape.
“This is more than just a victory for Hamz Stadium—it is a win for Uganda and African football,” Mulindwa stated. “We are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards as we prepare to host these prestigious tournaments, providing a platform for talent to flourish and for Uganda to shine on the continental stage.”

Beyond football, the approval from CAF is expected to drive significant economic and social benefits. The stadium’s upgraded status is set to boost Uganda’s tourism sector, attract international audiences, and foster the development of young football talent.
With world-class facilities and global recognition, Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo is now positioned as a premier venue for African football and a beacon of Uganda’s rising influence in the world of sports.
This landmark achievement solidifies Uganda’s growing presence in African football and underscores the country’s commitment to developing world-class sporting infrastructure.
