Kampala, (UG):– Hundreds of Thousands of Muslims across Uganda Saturday, March 1, 2025, commenced fasting as the holy month of Ramadan officially began as per the Muslim calendar.
This follows the sighting of the crescent moon as confirmed on Friday evening by Dr. Ziyad Swalleh Lubanga, the Director of Sharia at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC).
The start of Taraweeh prayers, special nightly prayers performed during Ramadan, also took place on Friday night, marking the beginning of spiritual devotion and reflection.
With the beginning of Ramadan, Muslims nationwide will observe the month-long fast from dawn to dusk, fulfilling one of the five pillars of Islam.
The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council has urged believers to embrace the spirit of peace, unity, and generosity throughout the month.
Dr. Lubanga encouraged increased worship, acts of kindness, and support for the less fortunate, reminding Muslims to uphold the core values of Ramadan while fostering harmony with people of all faiths.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a sacred period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and charity.
During this period, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during daylight hours and break their fast at sunset with Iftar, the evening meal.
The Holy month of Ramadan is seen as an opportunity for spiritual renewal, self-discipline, and strengthening one’s faith.
This fasting period, lasting for 30 days, culminates in Eid al-Fitr, a festival marking the end of Ramadan, celebrated with prayers, feasts, and acts of charity as Muslims come together in gratitude and celebration.
