Mbale, (UG):- Budadiri West Member of Parliament, Hon Nathan Nandala Mafabi, has unveiled plans to identify and profile potential tourism sites across the Bugisu region, an initiative that aims to promote local tourism, increase revenue, and create a comprehensive database of tourism opportunities in the area.
Speaking over the weekend on Baraza Extra, a talk show on Elgon FM, Nandala emphasized that Bugisu is home to numerous untapped natural wonders and cultural landmarks. Among the sites he highlighted is the Sisiyi Falls in Bulambuli District, which he described as a location with deep historical significance and breathtaking beauty that deserves national and international recognition.
To spearhead the initiative, Nandala has tasked his Director of Operations, Rev. Jackson Magombe, with the responsibility of identifying and documenting all major tourism sites in the region.
Beyond scenic landscapes, Nandala underlined the importance of Elgon Pride Coffee, a premium brand under the Bugisu Cooperative Union, as a defining feature of the region. However, he expressed concern that while the coffee brand is well-known, Bugisu’s vast tourism potential remains largely overlooked.
To further promote local tourism, the MP introduced the Bududa-Sironko Trek, an annual event held on December 30th to encourage both domestic and international tourists to explore the region’s beauty.
Similarly, Budadiri East MP, Hon Sasaga Isiah Wanzila, echoed the urgency of documenting Bugisu’s historical landmarks.
Wanzila proposed that the burial sites of key ancestral figures Masaba and his three sons, Mwambu, Mubuya, and Wanale, should be formally recognized and preserved as heritage sites. He urged the government to prioritize road infrastructure improvements, noting that poor accessibility has significantly hindered tourism growth in the region.
Community Involvement and Economic Opportunities
Rev. Jackson Magombe, who also doubles as Hon. Nandala’s Personal Assistant, welcomed the assignment with enthusiasm, committing to start the documentation process by engaging knowledgeable elders who can provide invaluable historical insights.
He also encouraged young people to actively participate in the initiative, highlighting opportunities for employment as tour guides, drivers, and service providers similar to the thriving tourism sector in the neighboring Sebei region.
This ambitious plan, if executed effectively, could transform Bugisu into a major tourism hub, celebrating its natural wonders, historical richness, and cultural identity while creating jobs and boosting the local economy.
