Man, 25, kills wife, daughter and himself in tragic murder-suicide

Jinja, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Jinja are actively investigating a tragic incident after a man allegedly killed his wife and child before taking his own life in Katende Triangle Zone, Northern Division, Bugembe in Jinja City.

Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson SP James Mubi confirmed the incident, identifying the victims as 25-year-old Edirisa Isabirye, a boda boda rider, his wife Mirabu Kakazi, 17, and their nine-month-old daughter, Mirabu Munana.

According to preliminary reports, Isabirye allegedly placed a burning charcoal stove under their bed in the early hours of Tuesday morning, setting the mattress and entire room on fire while his wife and child were asleep.

The fire claimed their lives, and upon realizing the gravity of his actions, Isabirye reportedly hanged himself in the same room using a bedsheet.

“On March 11, at around 2:30 am, it’s reported that he intentionally set a mattress on fire, he placed a burning charcoal stove under the bed targeting his wife and daughter. Subsequently, the room caught massive fire, leaving the two family members (Mum & daughter) dead,” SP Mubi said in a Tuesday statement.

Police conducted multiple visits to the scene and established that the couple had a troubled marriage marred by frequent arguments, domestic violence, and controlling behavior. Investigators believe these issues may have contributed to the tragic incident.

“Preliminary findings indicate that their marriage was toxic, characterized by feelings of being trapped, unending conflicts, severe beatings, and disrespectful and controlling behavior,” Mubi stated.

He urged couples and those in relationships to prioritize mutual respect, trust, open communication, and kindness. He also advised people to recognize early warning signs of toxic relationships and seek professional help when necessary.

“People should be able to detect red flags in marriages or relationships to make informed decisions, especially in life-threatening situations. Knowing when to leave or seek professional counseling can save lives,” Mubi emphasized.

DailyExpress has learned that Mirabu Kakazi, the deceased wife, was the daughter of Peter Kiwaala and will be laid to rest in Namagera Town Council, Jinja District. Isabirye and his daughter will be buried in Bukoma subcounty, Luuka District.
