Motsepe re-elected for second term as CAF President

Cairo, (EGY):- Dr. Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected unopposed as President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for a second four-year term, following a decision made at the 14th CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

Motesepe’s re-election will see him continue at the helm of African football’s governing body until 2029.

His first term, which began in 2021, was marked by significant achievements, notably in stabilizing CAF’s finances and enhancing its global visibility.

Under his leadership, the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire 2023 attracted a record 1.4 billion viewers worldwide, highlighting the growing appeal of African football.

The increased prize money for major competitions such as the CAF Champions League and the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations further demonstrated Motsepe’s commitment to improving the financial landscape for the sport across the continent.

Notably, the South African business magnate and philanthropist, who is Africa’s ninth richest individual, faced no opposition in the race for the presidency after the nomination deadline closed in November 2024.

His decision to seek re-election was influenced by strong support from Member Association Presidents and key stakeholders within CAF.

Motsepe’s focus for the coming term includes continuing efforts to make African football globally competitive, further stabilizing CAF’s financial footing, and enhancing infrastructure investments across the continent.

“The goal remains making African football globally competitive, stabilizing finances, and investing in infrastructure,” Motsepe stated.

Motsepe initially made history in 2021 by becoming the first English-speaking president of CAF, following the suspension of his predecessor, Ahmad Ahmad.
