Group D of the Pepsi University Football League (UFL) wrapped up on Tuesday, with Bugema and Kampala University securing important results to secure quarterfinal spots.
Bugema, already qualified with 13 points, drew 1-1 with Gulu University, while Kampala University defeated KIU 2-11-2 to send the Flying Eagles into the quarterfinals.
Dennis Kimuli converted a penalty in the 14th minute for Bugema, but Gulu’s Bushera Majid equalized in the 90th minute with a penalty in what appeared to be a dramatic match on the afternoon. Despite the draw, Bugema finished at the top of the group.
The hosts’ head coach, Meddy Nyanzi, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance. “I’m happy that Bugema qualified for the next round,” the Bugema University coach said.
“I gave a chance to new players today. We were not expecting this result, but the good thing is that we all qualified for the quarters,” he added.
In the second match, Kampala University sealed a 2-1 victory over KIU. Kimera Joseph (2’) and Gilbert Wanuume (8’) gave the Flying Eagles an early 2-0 lead. Although Mpiima Kenneth (76’) pulled one back for KIU, KU held on to book their place in the quarterfinals.
Kampala University now waits for results from other groups to confirm their place in the knockout stage, but with 12 points, they are likely to qualify.
The top two teams from Group D, Bugema and another, will join Uganda Martyrs University in the quarterfinals.
Today (Wednesday), Group A teams will be in action, with Busitema University hosting ISBAT and Nkumba welcoming IUIU at 3:00 pm.
