Kampala, (UG):- The 2025 Rwenzori Marathon is already shaping up to be a major international event, with registrations flooding in from runners across the globe.
According to Amos Wekesa, one of the key organizers, the marathon has already attracted participants from at least 10 countries within just two weeks of opening registration.
“The numbers are looking good. We’ve already received registrations from 10 countries, and it’s only been two weeks since we opened registration,” Wekesa revealed.
The marathon, set for August 23, 2025, will be the fourth edition of the event, following a record turnout in 2024, which saw over 3,500 participants from 34 countries.
This year’s race promises to be just as competitive, with participants preparing for the challenging terrain of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Wekesa emphasised the mental and physical endurance required to complete the marathon, particularly beyond the 28-kilometre mark, where steep hills test runners’ limits.
“We saw how the 2024 edition shocked many, including Kenyan runners like Raymond Otiendo.” The hill challenge pushes one to the limit, testing both physical stamina and mental strength,” he added.
Beyond the race itself, Wekesa emphasized the marathon’s role in boosting Uganda’s tourism. He cited a recent expedition where nine tourists from the USA completed a six-day trek to the Rwenzori Mountains’ summit, inspired by the marathon’s promotion of Uganda’s natural wonders.
“This marathon is not just about running; it’s about showcasing Uganda’s breathtaking landscapes and creating lasting memories for visitors,” Wekesa said.
The event will feature multiple race categories, including 5km, 10km, 21km (half marathon), and 42km (full marathon).
The marathon is brought to you in proud partnership with the Rotary Cancer Run with a budding cause of raising funds and awareness for cancer prevention.
