The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) secured their spot in the UFL quarterfinals on Wednesday after a tense goalless draw with Nkumba University in the final Group A match.
The draw was enough for IUIU to finish as group leaders, ending a seven-year wait to reach this stage of the competition.
Nkumba, needing a win to advance, came out strong in the first half, pressing IUIU with high intensity. However, despite their efforts, they couldn’t break the deadlock. Kamori and Kagimu had chances early on, but IUIU’s defense stood firm.
The second half saw Nkumba continue their attacks, with Lubega Ismael coming close with a free kick, only for IUIU’s goalkeeper Musasizi Sadat to make a stunning save.
Nkumba kept pushing, but Musasizi and his defense blocked every effort, including several key chances in the final moments of the match. With the 0-0 draw, IUIU finished Group A with 12 points, securing the top spot.
For Nkumba, the result means their hopes of advancing now depend on Makerere University’s result in Group B. If Makerere wins by more than three goals, Nkumba will be out.
In the other Group A match, Isbat University defeated Busitema 4-1, but both teams were already eliminated from the tournament.
IUIU now joins other teams like Uganda Martyrs, Bugema, and Kampala University in the quarterfinals.
