Kamuli mother arrested for killing and burying one-year-old daughter

Kamuli, (UG):– The Territorial Police in Kamuli District have arrested a 21-year-old mother on allegations of killing and secretly burying her one-year-old daughter about two weeks ago.

Mulungi Zainabu, 21, a resident of Nalinaibi village in Nawanyago sub-county, is alleged to have killed Kabawo Hadija in the tragic incident that is believed to have occurred on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Suspicion arose among neighbours and relatives when they noticed the child’s absence for two days. When questioned about her daughter’s whereabouts, Mulungi claimed she had taken the child to the hospital and was going to check on her.

On Tuesday, Mulungi left home and remained absent until her arrest in Kamuli Municipality on Thursday.

The situation took a grim turn on Friday, March 14, 2025, at around 9:00 pm when family members detected a foul smell. A subsequent search led them to a suspected grave. After involving the local chairperson, they confirmed that the child had been buried there, prompting them to alert the police.

Investigations indicate that the suspect’s husband, Kabawo Asuman, was away at his other residence in Mbulamuti when the incident occurred.

Before his departure, the child had fallen ill, and both parents had sought medical attention. Asuman was later shocked to learn of his child’s death under suspicious circumstances.

A team of detectives visited the scene, exhumed the body, and transported it to Kamuli General Hospital for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.

Police commended the vigilance of the local community in reporting the matter, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in ensuring justice. Further inquiries are ongoing to establish the full details surrounding the incident.
