Kampala, (UG):- Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Arnold Okwi has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an illustrious 16-year career.

The 32-year-old forward, who made his national team debut in 2009, leaves behind an impressive record of 28 goals in 95 appearances for Uganda.

Okwi took over the captaincy in 2021 following the retirement of legendary goalkeeper Denis Onyango, but a struggle in form left him snubbed for Cranes’ squad call-ups for competitive fixtures. His final appearance for Uganda came in 2023 during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

In an emotional farewell statement shared via his official social media platforms, Okwi reflected on his journey with the national team saying; “Representing my country on the international stage has been a fulfilling dream that came true. Donning the Uganda Cranes shirt always left a special feeling, and captaining our team was an absolute privilege and honour.”

He also expressed confidence in the future of Ugandan football, especially with the country set to host the CHAN and AFCON tournaments in the coming years. “It’s time to step aside and pave the way for our young talents,” he added.

Currently playing for Rwanda’s Kiyovu SC, Okwi has enjoyed a remarkable club career, representing top teams such as SC Villa, Simba SC, Young Africans, and Etoile du Sahel.

Okwi leaves behind a lasting legacy, including standout performances in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored two crucial goals against DR Congo and Zimbabwe. His contribution to Ugandan football will be remembered for years to come.

Below is his statement;

Representing my country on the international stage has been a fulfilling dream that came true. Donning the Uganda Cranes shirt always left a special feeling and captaining our team was an absolute privilege and honour.

An exciting new era for Ugandan football is coming up with East Africa hosting the CHAN later this August and subsequently the AFCON 2027 with many young footballers coming up. That is why, having cherished all those memories, I believe it is time for me to bow out and pave the way for our talented young football players.

I will always hold close to my heart the love shown to me by all the fans and my special thanks go to my family, Coach Bobby Williamson who handed me a debut, all the successive coaches thereafter with whom we created memories together through thick and thin and of course the leadership at the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).
