A sectional of visual artists from the East African Countries of Uganda, Kenya, Democratic of Congo, Sudan and Singapore gathered at Makerere University Art Gallery to exhibit artworks aimed at spreading information on how to combat the spread of HIV and also tackle the growing challenges of mental health in their countries
The exhibition named Expressions, Art for Awareness was held at Makerere University Art Gallery for two days (14th-15th, March 2025) and the exhibition was curated by Ugandan visual artist Desmond Feni and supported by an organization called Elpis Uganda.
Feni revealed that the artists travelled all the way from their countries to Kampala because HIV and mental health are global health challenges that need a global approach to addressing them and said art is one of the tools that have powerful messages in highlighting the effects of this problem
“Through a diverse range of mediums such as paintings, sculptures, ceramics and mixed media, these artists challenge stigma, foster empathy and open up critical conversations. Their works speak of resilience and vulnerability, isolation and community plus pain and healing. They remind us of the need to address the mental and emotional well-being of the affected,” he said.

Feni added that the event was more than an exhibition because the artists got an opportunity to interact with the audience about the meaning of each artwork which they made
“It is a space where art becomes a bridge between personal experience and public understanding by breaking down barriers and inspiring action. May these works spark dialogue, encourage support and remind us of the power of creativity in shaping a more compassionate and informed society,” he emphasized
