Kampala, (UG):- The Police in Kampala has confirmed a total number of 36 individuals across Central Police Station (CPS), Katwe, and Jinja Road stations have been detained, fingerprinted, and subsequently presented in court following their arrest in a recent crackdown on drink-driving in the city and it’s metropolitan areas.
Traffic Police Spokesperson SP Michael Kananura confirmed the development in a statement via X, formerly Twitter. Kananura highlighted the dangers of alcohol consumption on driving abilities, stating that it “significantly impairs driving abilities, affecting attention, perception, motor skills, decision-making & contributes to traffic crashes resulting into injuries & fatalities.”
The traffic PRO urged motorists to “refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol & drugs, emphasizing the importance of responsible driving practices.”
Kananura further noted that these operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to ensure safer roads for everyone.
Under Uganda’s Traffic and Road Safety Act, 1998 (amended in 2020), driving under the influence of alcohol above the recommended limit—80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood—can result in a fine not exceeding 300 currency points (equivalent to UGX 6 million) or imprisonment of up to three years, or both.
In September 2023, a similar operation led to the arrest of 173 drivers across six divisions of Kampala Metropolitan, including Kiira Road, Wandegeya, Old Kampala, CPS Kampala, and Katwe. Each offender was fined UGX 200,000.
