Museveni hails Hoima Stadium progress, reveals upgrade plans for Akii-Bua and Gulu Airport

Hoima, (UG):- President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has praised the swift progress on the construction of Hoima City Stadium, and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing sports infrastructure in the whole country.

During an inspection visit to Hoima City on Wednesday, the President, accompanied by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, acknowledged Uganda’s rich sporting history but noted that economic challenges had long delayed investments in sports facilities.

Apart from Namboole and Nakivubo, he observed, the country had made little progress in stadium development. However, he assured Ugandans that this was changing.

With Uganda set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), President Museveni emphasized the urgent need to strengthen infrastructure, not just for sports, but also for tourism and hospitality.

He pledged government support in stimulating private-sector investment, particularly in expanding hotel capacity in Hoima City to accommodate the influx of visitors expected during the tournament.

Additionally, he announced plans to upgrade Akii-Bua Stadium and transform Gulu Airport into an international facility, further boosting regional connectivity.

The President commended SUMMA, the project’s contractor, for its efficiency, describing the rapid progress as a testament to the company’s capability.

Government Leaders Highlight the Impact of Sports Infrastructure

Vice President H.E. Jessica Alupo underscored the role of sports in boosting Uganda’s global reputation. She stressed that investments in modern stadiums would provide local athletes with world-class training facilities and enhance the country’s competitiveness on the international stage.

Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja reaffirmed Uganda’s readiness to co-host AFCON 2027, calling the Hoima Stadium project a transformative development for the region.

She highlighted its potential beyond football, noting that it would serve as a hub for youth development programs, talent nurturing, and job creation.

“The construction has already generated employment and business opportunities in Hoima, directly benefiting the local economy,” she said, while also praising SUMMA’s professionalism and commitment to delivering quality work on time.

First Lady Applauds Progress and Coordination Efforts

Maama Janet Museveni expressed her gratitude to President Museveni for personally inspecting the construction works, reaffirming its significance as a key facility for AFCON 2027. “I am pleased with the tremendous progress made by SUMMA in just seven months since construction began in September 2024,” she said.

The First Lady, who is Minister for Education and Sports, also commended Hon. Peter Ogwang and local leaders for their vigilance in overseeing the project and providing regular feedback to ensure government support where necessary.

Highlighting the coordinated approach to hosting major tournaments, Maama Janet revealed the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Forum that brings together various government agencies to address challenges beyond the Education and Sports Sector.

“Hosting CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027 requires a multi-sectoral approach, and this forum ensures that all aspects such as infrastructure, security, and hospitality—are effectively handled,” she explained.

She also acknowledged the generosity of the late Dr. James Rujumba, who donated 10 acres of land, and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), which provided an additional 10 acres. Combined with the 22 acres purchased by the government, this forms a 42-acre site for the stadium complex.

“I also appreciate SUMMA for creating employment opportunities, as I understand that 80% of the nearly 900 workers on this site are Ugandans,” she added.

Contractor and Local Leaders Express Commitment

Mr Murat Altun, the project manager for SUMMA, assured stakeholders of the company’s dedication to delivering a world-class stadium on schedule. He credited the unwavering support of President Museveni and the First Lady for the project’s smooth progress.

Hoima City Mayor, Mr Brian Kaboyo, expressed gratitude to the President and First Lady for prioritizing infrastructure development in the Bunyoro sub-region. He cited key projects such as Kabalega International Airport, improved road networks, and now Hoima City Stadium as transformative investments.
