University Football League: Uganda Martyrs edge champions Nkumba in epic 1-2 comeback

Entebbe, (UG):- Uganda Martyrs University mounted a remarkable comeback to defeat defending champions Nkumba University 1-2 at the Beach Boys Arena in Entebbe on Wednesday.

The match was goalless at halftime, with both teams failing to capitalize on early opportunities.

Nkumba had a strong start, with Ssewakambo John Kennedy setting up Kavuma Abbey, whose effort was blocked by Uganda Martyrs defender Mutebi Patrick.

The second half saw Nkumba take the lead in the 51st minute after being awarded a penalty for a foul on Solomon Mwiruka. Ssewakambo converted confidently to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

However, Uganda Martyrs responded just 10 minutes later. A penalty was awarded to the visitors in the 60th minute for a foul on Agamile Ivan, and Kayondo Joseph calmly equalized from the spot.

Just minutes later, Uganda Martyrs took the lead in the 64th minute. Agamile Ivan netted a brilliant flick to make it 2-1 in favour of the visitors.

The hosts pressed for an equalizer, with Tasumba coming close in the 75th minute, but his curling shot went just over the crossbar.

Throughout the match, Akena, the keeper for UMU, was instrumental in securing the win, making a crucial save to deny Nkumba’s Ismael Lubega late in the game.

Despite a valiant effort from Nkumba, Uganda Martyrs held on for the 2-1 victory. The return leg will take place next Tuesday.

Next up in the UFL quarterfinals, St. Lawrence University will face Ndejje University today, Thursday, March 20, while Kampala University will clash with Islamic University in Uganda on Friday, March 21.
