Kampala, (UG): The burial and final send-off of Martha Ahumuza Murari, the 23-year-old girl who collapsed and died at Mezo Noir, under mysterious circumstances is set for today at her ancestral home in Nyarubanga in Mbarara City, western Uganda.

Martha, the daughter of Mr Seth Murari, the National Sports and Games Coordinator at Office of the Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Presidential Advisor on Sports was reportedly drinking with a friend before moving to the club’s manager’s office an area without CCTV cameras where she collapsed.

Her mother, Mrs Barbara Murari, while speaking at a Saturday funeral service held at All Saints in Kampala was overcome with grief as she described how she had done everything to protect her only daughter.

“The devil stole my daughter; he stole her without falling sick,” Mrs Murari said, recalling the efforts she made to ensure Martha’s safety while growing up.

“I refused her to stay in the hostel on campus; she obeyed. I asked her to move in the taxi; and she complied. I asked her to move by boda boda; she accepted, but later I said, What if my only daughter gets a problem on a boda boda? I decided to buy her a car.”

Martha had recently completed university education and graduated from ISBAT on December 5, 2024, a moment her mother celebrated. “She studied for three years at university and brought me a degree. I was happy, and I celebrated,” Barbara said, adding that she had looked forward to seeing her daughter start a family.

“At a time when I should be relaxing, looking forward to her bringing me a husband, starting a family, and blessing me with grandchildren, the devil has stolen her from me.”

Martha’s father, Seth Murari, said he would not speak about his late daughter. “Right now, I don’t feel any bone in my body. This is not an easy day,” Murari said.

Robert Kagonyera, the deceased’s uncle, described her as exceptional, recalling her kindness and willingness to step in whenever needed.

“Sometimes she would call me, particularly when I had school visitations for the children, and ask, ‘Uncle, can I go on your behalf and check on the child at school?’ She would step in for me, and it always brought me great joy.”

A soldier by profession, Kagonyera admitted that Martha’s passing has deeply affected him. “We soldiers don’t cry, but when I heard about Martha’s death, I cried. Martha was a clear definition of love and purity. That gives me confidence that Martha is in heaven because she was a gift. I think Martha is an angel in heaven.”

He added that her passing was not only a loss to the family but also to the country. “The country has lost. There’s a lot that the government would gain from her,” Kagonyera said.

Meanwhile, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango said on Friday, March 21, 2025, that two suspects; Edward Mugabo and his brother Joseph Kalenzi are in detention to aid police in investigations following the death of the 23-year-old patron.
