Kampala, (UG):– At least five people have been confirmed dead with the toll likely to increase after floods swept through Uganda’s capital Kampala following a heavy downpour on Wednesday morning.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that the intense rainfall caused widespread devastation, with motor accidents, pedestrians being swept away, and significant property damage reported across the city.

“The Kampala Metropolitan Police, in coordination with the Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, continues to respond to multiple emergency calls following the heavy downpour experienced in various parts of Kampala early this morning. The intense rainfall led to severe flooding, resulting in motor accidents, pedestrians being swept away by fast-moving water, and significant property damage,” Owoyesigyire said.

Among the victims were two children, three-year-old Otim Kisa Eliza and 11-month-old Ochaka Chon, who drowned in their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto.

According to Mr Owoyesigyire, their mother, Lenunu Rose Mary, had locked them inside the house while she was away at work. She has since been arrested by Kira Road Police on allegations of negligence, with neighbors alleging that leaving the children unattended was a recurring practice.

“Regrettably, we confirm that five people have lost their lives due to the flooding. Three bodies were recovered from the Kinawataka area (we are working on having them identified), while two children, identified as Otim Kisa Eliza and Ochaka Chon, tragically drowned in their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto,” Owoyesigyire stated.

The KMP Deputy Publicist has since urged the public to take extra precautions during heavy rains, warning against unnecessary movement to avoid accidents.

“Our rescue teams remain on the ground, assessing the situation and providing necessary assistance. We urge the public to take precautionary measures during heavy rains,” said Owoyesigyire.

“Boda boda riders are strongly advised not to risk crossing flooded roads and to wait until water levels recede for safe passage. Residents should secure their homes and ensure the safety of children, especially during extreme weather conditions,” he advised.

As heavy rains continue, authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid flood-prone areas. “We extend our deepest condolences to the affected families and urge the public to remain vigilant during this rainy season,” he added.

Meanwhile, police said the bodies of the deceased have been taken to the City Mortuary in Mulago for postmortem examination.

The heavy floods wreaked havoc across Kampala, submerging major roads and causing significant transport disruptions.

Motorists and pedestrians were stranded in multiple areas, including Queen’s Way Flyover (recently launched by President Museveni) sections of the Northern Bypass, the Kampala-Jinja road near Kyambogo University, Kinawataka-Katoogo Road, Kyebando, and Najjera. Downtown Kampala was also severely affected, with businesses and homes flooded.
