Man, 52, killed by stepsons in brutal family dispute

PALLISA, Uganda:– Police in Pallisa District have launched investigations into the gruesome murder of 52-year-old Obuya John, who was attacked and killed by his adopted stepsons on Monday, March 24, 2025, in a case linked to deep-seated family conflicts.

The incident, classified as a murder by cutting, took place around 5:00 PM in Abila village, Kapuwuai parish, Opwateta sub-county. According to a report filed by local businessman Ochola Marino, the attack occurred on the eve of a planned family meeting meant to resolve long-standing disputes between Obuya and his wife, Kiyaye Rose.

For 18 years, Obuya and Rose had lived together but frequently clashed over property ownership, particularly a plot of land they had jointly purchased. Rose claimed she contributed more to its acquisition, fueling tensions between them.

Additionally, she had developed serious health complications, which she believed were caused by her husband’s alleged involvement in witchcraft, further straining their relationship.

As arguments escalated on the fateful evening, Obuya’s stepsons, Obuya Tom and Omoding Peter, allegedly launched a violent attack on him, striking his head multiple times. Witnesses described the assault as brutal and unprovoked, leading to his immediate death.

Police swiftly responded, registering the case under PAL CRB 132/2025. A team led by District Criminal Investigations Officer D/ASP Twesigye Hamdan visited the crime scene, gathered evidence, and recorded witness statements. Authorities have since arrested Kiyaye Rose to aid in the ongoing investigation.

Bukedi North Regional Police Commander ACP Mwanga Kitiyo Moses confirmed to DailyExpress that Obuya’s body has been sent to Mbale Hospital for a postmortem examination as inquiries continue.

Meanwhile, police are actively hunting for the two prime suspects, Obuya Tom and Omoding Peter, who fled the scene following the attack. Investigators are also working to recover any exhibits linked to the crime, with plans to submit the case file to the State Attorney for legal guidance.
