Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) advanced to the semifinals of the 2024/2025 Pepsi University Football League after a 2-2 draw against Nkumba University, sealing a 4-3 aggregate victory.
The match, held at UMU’s home ground, saw early excitement when Patrick Mutebi put the Saints ahead in the 2nd minute, heading in a corner kick from Joseph Kayondo.
Nkumba responded in the 24th minute as Abbey Kavuma rose above the defense to equalize with a header.
The hosts regained the lead in the 34th minute, as Kaija Sunny reacted quickest to tap in a rebound from another Kayondo delivery.
The tension heightened in the 44th minute when Nkumba’s Buruhani Tasumba leveled the score, making it 2-2, but the Beach Boys couldn’t find a winner in the second half.
Despite relentless pressure, UMU held firm, securing their place in the semifinals.
With the final whistle, the Saints marched past Nkumba on aggregate, marking a historic moment as the first university to qualify for the semifinals this season.
Elsewhere, in the other quarterfinal, the match between Bugema University and Muteesa Royal University ended prematurely due to Muteesa players exiting the field on the orders of the university officials.
The game had remained goalless at the time, and the UFL committee will determine the next steps.
Bugema is now poised to advance to the semifinals, pending further decisions from the organizers.
The quarterfinals are set to continue on Wednesday, with Ndejje University hosting St. Lawrence University after St. Lawrence’s 2-1 victory in the first leg at Kavule.
