Rabat, Morocco:- The Uganda U17 national football team, the Cubs, will kick off their TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign against hosts, Morocco, in a highly anticipated opening match.
This year marks Uganda’s third appearance at the U17 AFCON as they continue the quest for a historic berth at the FIFA U17 World Cup.
The game, scheduled to take place this Sunday, March 30, 2025, kicks off at 10 PM Moroccan time (1 AM EAT on Monday).
Uganda secured their place in the tournament by emerging victorious in the CECAFA U17 Qualifiers, where they defeated Tanzania 2-1 in the final at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, Kampala.
In the pre-tournament preparations for the competition, the Uganda Cubs put up a spirited performance in competitive friendly matches against Burkina Faso and Cameroon, narrowly losing 2-3 and 3-4, respectively.
These encounters have provided valuable experience for the young squad ahead of their crucial tournament opener.
With the relentless and full support from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and a squad full of determination, the Uganda Cubs will be looking to make a strong statement in Morocco.
The tourney also presents an opportunity for Uganda’s young stars to showcase their talent on the continental stage and inspire a new generation of footballers back home.
A successful AFCON campaign could see the Cubs secure a coveted spot at the FIFA U17 World Cup, an achievement that would further elevate Uganda’s reputation in youth football.
