KAMPALA, Uganda:– The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has called upon Muslims nationwide to observe the sky on the evening of Saturday, March 29, 2025, for the sighting of the crescent moon, which will determine the end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
The Director of Sharia at UMSC, Dr. Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga, in a press release issued Thursday, March 27, 2025, emphasized the importance of this observation, stating that if the moon is sighted on March 29, Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30.
“I would like to request Muslims in Uganda to watch out for the sight of the moon in the evening of Saturday, 29th March 2025, because this will be the 29th day of Ramadhan 1446AH” Dr Lubanga wrote.
Eid al-Fitr, known as the “festival of completion the fasting period,” marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan, a period dedicated to fasting, prayer, and reflection.
The exact date of Eid varies annually, contingent upon lunar observations. This year, the anticipated dates align with global expectations, as Eid al-Fitr is projected to fall on either March 30 or 31, depending on the moon-sighting.
Meanwhile, Dr. Lubanga provided contact numbers for individuals who observe the crescent moon or have credible information regarding its sighting on the said date.
“Whoever sights the moon or possesses reliable information regarding this matter is requested to pass the information to UMSC officials through the following mobile phone numbers: 0702595554 (Directorate of Sharia), 0701857922 (Public Relations Office) and 0782306313 (Registrar of Sharia),” he said.
He further expressed his well-wishes to the Muslim community, encouraging all to celebrate Eid in strict accordance with Islamic law.
