Shaka Ssali, the legendary Ugandan journalist who rose from humble beginnings to become one of Africa’s most influential media personalities, died Thursday, March 27, at the age of 71.
The former Voice of America (VoA) broadcaster, best known for hosting Straight Talk Africa, is said to have died in Virginia, US, according to a statement released by VOA on Thursday evening.
Ssali’s passing marks the end of an era for African journalism, as he was widely celebrated for using his platform to amplify African voices and shape political discourse on the continent.
For nearly three decades, his deep, resonant voice echoed across Africa, bringing insightful conversations with presidents, opposition leaders, business moguls, and scholars to millions of viewers and listeners. His ability to connect the aspirations of ordinary Africans with the continent’s leadership made him a household name and an icon of fearless journalism.
Early life and Background
Born in Kabale, southwestern Uganda, Ssali’s life was defined by resilience and an unwavering pursuit of knowledge. His early years were marked by hardship, forcing him to drop out of school at a young age. He later became a child soldier before seizing an opportunity to travel to the United States—an audacious move that would change the trajectory of his life.
Once in the U.S., he dedicated himself to education, earning a doctorate in cross-cultural communication from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). This academic achievement laid the foundation for his distinguished media career, as he sought to use journalism as a bridge between Africa and the world.
A Voice for Africa on the Global Stage
In 1992, Ssali joined Voice of America, where he worked for 29 years, 20 of them as the host of Straight Talk Africa. Under his leadership, the program became a vital platform for critical discussions on governance, democracy, and economic development. He interviewed some of Africa’s most influential figures, from sitting presidents and prime ministers to opposition leaders and grassroots activists.
His journalistic approach was direct yet balanced, earning him respect from both African leaders and the public. He never shied away from asking tough questions, yet he remained professional, ensuring that every voice was heard. His ability to dissect complex political and economic issues made Straight Talk Africa a must-watch program for those seeking an in-depth understanding of the continent’s affairs.
Awards & Recognitions
Throughout his career, Ssali received numerous accolades in recognition of his contributions to journalism and African discourse. He was a Ford Foundation Fellow and a recipient of the United Nations Peacekeeping Special Achievement Award in International Journalism. His work also earned him VoA’s Best Journalist Award, the Uganda Diaspora Award (2011), and the Kigezi College Butobere Highest Achievement Award in International Human Communication.
Even in retirement, his impact continued to resonate across the media landscape. He remained a mentor to many young journalists, encouraging them to uphold the principles of truth, fairness, and integrity in their reporting.
Tributes Pour in
News of his passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the globe. Many have described him as a journalist who not only told Africa’s story but also empowered Africans to speak for themselves.
One of his admirers, Roland Muhinda, paid tribute, saying: “Shaka was a straight-talking journalist who fairly, and without bias, gave Africa’s opposition and liberation movements a voice on the world stage.”
With Ssali’s departure, Africa has lost not just a journalist but a storyteller who dedicated his life to ensuring that African voices were heard in global conversations. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of journalists and media professionals.
Dr. Shaka may be gone, but his impact on African journalism and the lives he touched will live on forever.
