International Theatre Institute launches office in Uganda

Kampala, Uganda:- The International Theatre Institute (ITI) has officially launched its national office in Uganda, marking a significant milestone for the country’s performing arts sector. The launch coincided with World Theatre Day celebrations on March 27, 2025, at the Uganda National Theatre.

The office located at the Uganda National Cultural Centre (National Theatre) was handed over to the Institute officials by the Executive Director of UNCC, Francis Peter Ojedde.

In his remarks, Ojedde said that he allowed the ITI office to be at the National Theatre because UNCC is there to support institutions that support the creative industry in Uganda

“As UNCC, we are honored to have the Ugandan office of the International Theatre Institute because our job is to support the creative industry with the capacity to manage their activities. We have a lot of space here where offices will be built to accommodate more associations and organizations,” he said

Ojedde also congratulated Dr. Jessica Atwooki Kaahwa for being elected the President of the Executive Board, International Theatre Institute (worldwide)

On her side, Atwooki thanked UNCC for the facility and said it’s time to build the organization by mobilizing theatre professionals all over Uganda to be part of it

As part of the launch, celebrated actress Aganza Kisaka was appointed President of the International Theatre Institute, Uganda, replacing Amelia Mboto Kyaka, who had been serving as Acting President since 2022.

Founded in 1948 by theatre and dance experts in collaboration with UNESCO, the International Theatre Institute is the world’s largest performing arts organization. It has national offices in various countries, including Uganda, where it aims to support and develop the theatre industry.

The launch of ITI Uganda’s office is expected to enhance the country’s theatre landscape by fostering collaboration, professional growth, and international exposure for Ugandan theatre practitioners.
