Kampala, Uganda:- The Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) has strongly condemned recent remarks made by FUFA President Moses Magogo, following his comments on journalists questioning the pricing of Uganda Cranes match tickets.
Magogo expressed frustration with media personnel, claiming they were fueling the narrative that ticket prices at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, were too high,” he said.
Speaking on FUFA TV, the FUFA President dismissed the concerns, stating, “The journalists claiming that matchday tickets are overpriced have free access to Namboole on match days.”
“Fans, do you really think these journalists care about you more than your interests? They are working for someone else, reporting to undermine the positive initiatives we are implementing.” He added.
Magogo also defended the price increase from Shs25,000 to Shs30,000, attributing it to inflation and rising costs, particularly fuel prices. “The ticket that cost Shs25,000 in 2011 is now equivalent to Shs67,000 today,” he explained.
However, in response to these remarks, USPA, through a statement signed by General Secretary Shafik Ssenoga on Monday afternoon, condemned Magogo’s remarks as “demeaning and disrespectful to sports journalists and claimed they “undermine the vital role that the media plays in promoting professionalism and ethical reporting in Uganda.
“We find these remarks demeaning and disrespectful to sports journalists. These statements undermine the vital role that the media plays in promoting professionalism and ethical reporting in Uganda.” The statement further read.
“The media plays an indispensable role in informing the public, highlighting achievements, and holding stakeholders accountable. Disparaging remarks against journalists only serve to create unnecessary divisions and hinder progress.”
The Association also emphasized that mutual respect and collaboration between FUFA and the media were crucial for the growth of Ugandan football. “We are also engaging FUFA over this matter and we hope to have this solved with an amicable solution.” USPA concluded
