The House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda on Saturday, 30th March 2025, elected Rev. Canon Kugonza Joshua as the 3rd Bishop of Masindi-Kitara Diocese during a meeting held at Zebra Hotel in Masaka City.
In an official statement released on the afternoon, the Church congratulated Rev. Canon Kugonza on his election and expressed confidence in his leadership and dedication to the spiritual and social growth of the Diocese.
Kugonza will be consecrated and enthroned as the 3rd Bishop of the Diocese on 3rd August 2025 at St Matthews Cathedral Masindi.
In his acceptance remarks upon being announced, the Bishop-elect acknowledged the responsibility placed upon him, saying, “I am humbled and grateful to God for this calling. I pledge to serve with dedication and integrity, guided by the principles of faith, love, and service to all.”
Born on October 7, 1976, in Kiryandongo District, Rev. Canon Kugonza has been deeply rooted in his faith since his conversion on September 13, 1989, at Alwala Church of Uganda in Apac District, West Lango Diocese.
Kugonza’s journey in church leadership began when he was ordained as a Deacon on January 3, 2010, followed by his priesting on December 14, 2010, at St. Matthews Cathedral, Masindi, where he was later appointed Canon.
Currently serving as the Diocesan Secretary of Masindi-Kitara Diocese since 2021, Rev. Canon Kugonza brings extensive leadership experience to his new position. He previously served as a Parish Priest, Project Officer with Samaritan’s Purse, Headteacher, and Teacher at Kigumba Intensive Primary School.
Rev. Canon Kugonza is an alumnus of Uganda Christian University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity. He also holds a Diploma in Education from National Teachers College, Ngetta, Lira District, alongside several other professional qualifications.
Kugonza is married to Mrs. Proscovia Allen Kugonza, and the couple is blessed with four children.
The Masindi-Kitara Diocese, established in 2004, continues to thrive under visionary leadership, and the election of Rev. Canon Kugonza is expected to usher in a new era of growth and transformation.
