The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has scheduled May 7, 2025, as the date for the hearing of a case involving former Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Mr. Herbert Anderson Burora, who is accused of spreading hate speech against the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among.
The presiding Chief Magistrate, Ronald Kayizzi, fixed the hearing after Mr. Burora admitted that attempts to negotiate with Ms. Among had failed. “I did my part; the court can fix a hearing date for the matter,” Mr. Burora told court on Wednesday afternoon.
In the case which Mr Burora allegedly committed last year, the former Rubaga and Nakawa Deputy RCC is accused of six counts of hate speech and spreading malicious information about the Speaker, whom he allegedly portrayed as a torturer, murderer, kidnapper, and corrupt individual.
State Prosecution contends that Burora, between March 2024 and June 2024, allegedly made defamatory content that was disseminated through Mr. Burora’s X handle, “@harderHB”, with the intent to “cause ridicule, degrade or demean, and promote hostility” against Ms. Among.
Despite the charges, Mr. Burora has maintained his innocence.
The hearing, fixed for May 7, is expected to provide more insights into the case and determine whether Mr. Burora’s alleged actions constitute a violation of the law.
The case highlights ongoing tensions over the misuse of digital platforms to spread malicious information and the growing need for legal frameworks to address online hate speech.
