GUIDE: How to pay for electricity under new UEDCL ‘Light Pay’ system

Kampala, Uganda:- The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) on Monday officially launched its new “Light Pay” system, replacing the long-standing “Yaka” under Umeme. This transition follows the conclusion of Umeme’s 20-year concession, with UEDCL now fully in charge of electricity distribution across the country.

The “Light” system, part of a broader effort to streamline and enhance electricity service delivery, is poised to make the process more efficient and user-friendly as compared to the previous system of YAKA.

Under the new system, consumers can continue purchasing electricity units using MTN, Airtel, and various FINTECH platforms, with all transactions now directed through the “Light” system.

How to Pay for Electricity Using the “Light” System

Here’s a breakdown of how you can pay for your electricity through the new “Light” system:

1. Available Platforms

  • You can purchase electricity units using MTN, Airtel, and FINTECH platforms.
  • Effective today, April 01, 2025, the Umeme Touch Pay platform has been decommissioned, so all transactions must now be made through the UEDCL “Light” system.

2. Smooth Transition

No interruptions are expected for customers purchasing electricity. The transition is designed to be seamless, ensuring continuous service delivery.

3. Validity of Unutilized Units

Any unutilized Yaka units purchased before March 31, 2025, will remain valid. Customers do not need to worry about losing previously purchased units.

4. Payment Methods

  • Mobile Money: Pay using MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money by selecting the “Light” option that replaces “Yaka” from the menu.
  • Dial your provider’s USSD code (*165# for MTN, *185# for Airtel)
  • Navigate to the “Pay Bill” or “Utilities” section
  • Look for “UEDCL Light” (it might still be under “Electricity” in some menus)
  • Enter your meter number (yes, the same one you’ve always used)
  • Input your desired amount and confirm with your PIN
  • You’ll receive an SMS with your token faster than you can say “load shedding”.

How to pay for UEDCL Light using Bank

  • Banks: Payments can also be made at the nearest DFCU Bank or Stanbic Bank.
  • FINTECH Platforms: Several licensed FINTECH platforms are integrated with the “Light” system for convenient payments.

5. Important Notice for Customers

  • UEDCL advises customers not to pay outside the approved platforms (MTN, Airtel, and FINTECH services) to avoid delays and potential fraud.
  • New customers need to present a customer reference number sent by UEDCL for the initial setup and registration.

6. For Postpaid Customers

  • Postpaid customers need to present their billing account numbers at the nearest bank to make payments.

7. Security and Safety Measures

  • To ensure a safe and reliable process, customers are advised to verify payment details carefully and avoid sharing sensitive information with unauthorized parties.

The launch of the “Light Pay” system is part of UEDCL’s broader strategy to enhance service delivery and improve customer satisfaction. As the government-owned entity takes over from Umeme, UEDCL has pledged to invest in modern infrastructure, reliable service, and improved efficiency.
