Oyam, Uganda:- Oyam District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Santa Alum Ogwang, has donated 250 Mama Kits to expectant mothers in Loro Town Council in a move aimed at promoting maternal health and reducing childbirth-related risks in the Northern Uganda district.

The donation was made on April 3, 2025, at Loro Health Centre III, during the town council’s belated Women’s Day celebrations.

Speaking during the handover, Hon. Alum said the initiative is a heartfelt commitment to ensuring safer births and empowering women. “Donating Mama Kits is my way of promoting maternal health and easing the challenges faced by families. Every mother deserves the pride of a safe and supported childbirth,” Alum said.

“As a woman and a leader who deeply understands the struggles women endure, I am committed to standing by those in need. This Mama Kit project is not just an initiative; it’s a heartfelt promise,” she added.

Alum also encouraged women to embrace resilience and hard work, citing her mother’s dedication in raising and educating nine children under challenging conditions, some of whom now hold doctorate degrees.

Francis Eyena, Acting In-Charge of Loro Health Centre III, hailed the donation of Mama Kits by Mp Alum, noting that despite the recent upgrade of the health centre from Level II to Level III, there remains a shortage of essential birthing supplies, including Mama Kits.

“This donation comes as a great relief to the health centre, as we strive to improve maternal health services amidst limited resources,” Eyena said.

Tackling Social Challenges

Speaking at the event, Vicky Atim Oyite, the female LC5 Councillor for Loro Sub-County and Loro Town Council, blamed excessive alcohol consumption among some men, resulting in domestic violence and also damaging marital relationships.

“When men come home drunk and neglect their responsibilities, it often leads to closeness being withheld, further escalating tensions within households. This cycle of neglect and frustration tears families apart, and men know that it’s time we address this issue to restore harmony in our homes,” Atim said.

Atim, tipped women to have the power to transform their families and communities through hard work and dedication while being respectful and understanding in their relationships, nurtures harmony at home that the next generation can emulate.

Joan Aceng, Senior Principal Community Development Officer of Loro Town Council, highlighted the need to address domestic issues, especially neglect from husbands, which constitute the majority of cases her office received from the community.

“We often resolve these cases through counseling sessions with the affected parties. However, in severe instances where the situation is grave, we refer the matter to the police for further action,” Aceng explained.

Kenneth Ayuku, a local resident who attended the event with his wife, praised the MP’s efforts and urged fellow men to support their families. “What motivated me to bring my wife here is the love I have for her and our family. It’s a personal commitment,” Ayuku said. “Let us, as men, treat our families with love. The impact will be felt not just at home but across the community.”

Chris Ongom, Oyam District Vice Chairperson, speaking on behalf of the local government, applauded Hon. Alum’s broader contributions to healthcare in the district, particularly the provision of ambulances to facilitate emergency maternal care.

“The ambulances you provided are a lifesaving initiative that directly benefits our people. Your commitment to healthcare is commendable,” Ongom said.
