Kampala, Uganda: Telecom giants MTN Uganda and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) have introduced a new award category (MTN Media Personality of the Year) in this year’s edition of the MTN-FUFA Awards, marking a landmark recognition of the media’s role in the promotion of Ugandan football.
The announcement of the new category came with the grand return of the MTN-FUFA awards, launched Friday, April 25, 2025, at the Kampala Serena Hotel. Now in their seventh edition, the 2024 awards are running under the theme “Celebrating Football Heroes, Inspiring Future Stars.”
Speaking at the launch of the awards, FUFA Awards Organizing Committee Chairman, Mr Rogers Byamukama, said the media category was introduced in acknowledgment of the critical role journalists play in promoting the game.
“We acknowledge that without the media, many of the achievements on and off the pitch would go unnoticed. This award is our way of saying thank you to those who tirelessly highlight football’s stories and successes,” Byamukama said.
He explained that the Best Sports Media Personality Award, fully sponsored by MTN Uganda, will honor a media professional who has shown excellence, passion, and consistency in football coverage over the past year.
FUFA confirmed that the nomination and voting guidelines will soon be released to ensure transparency and public participation.
John Paul Okwi, the Sponsorships and Events Manager at MTN Uganda, welcomed the addition of the journalist category as a long-overdue recognition of the storytellers behind the game.
“We believe football is about uniting people across all backgrounds, and the media plays a huge role in making that possible. This new award reflects our appreciation for the storytellers who bring the action closer to the fans,” Okwi remarked.
“Football is the game of many colours, many tribes, and this aligns with what MTN believes in—Together We Are Unstoppable. It is a very unique sport, and there is no way MTN cannot be part of it. The MTN-FUFA Awards will be one of the awards that will be marked on the calendar.”
The award will join existing categories, including Male and Female Player of the Year, Best XI Teams, Coaches of the Year, and the Upcoming Talent Award.
The 2024 awards ceremony is set to take place on May 30, 2025, at the Kampala Serena Hotel, and FUFA has promised a dynamic and inclusive celebration, with live coverage by FUFA TV and other football stakeholders.
