Boda-boda rider killed in head-on crash with Taxi on Njeru-Kayunga road

Buikwe, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a boda boda rider along the Njeru-Kayunga Road.

The accident, which occurred on Friday night at around 9:50 PM at Wakisi village, involved a Toyota Hiace taxi registration number UAV 300J and a numberless Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. The deceased, identified as Edirisa Nsereko, was a resident of Wakisi village.

According to Ssezibwa Regional Police spokesperson SP Hellen Butoto, preliminary findings indicate that the crash happened when the driver of the taxi attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming motorcycle.

“It’s alleged that Motor Vehicle Reg no. UAV 300J Toyota Hiace being driven by a yet unknown driver from the direction of Njeru heading towards Kayunga side, upon reaching Wakisi village, started overtaking another vehicle and in that process knocked the rider of the numberless Bajaj Boxer motorcycle in a head-on collision, killing him on the spot,” SP Butoto said in a statement issued Saturday, April 26, 2025.

Upon receiving reports of the crash, police officers rushed to the scene, conveyed the body of the deceased to Jinja Hospital Mortuary for postmortem, and impounded both the motorcycle and the taxi.

The two vehicles are currently parked at Njeru Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

Police reported that the taxi driver fled the scene and was still on the run by press time. “The driver of the taxi is on the run, but we are hunting for him to help us with investigations into this matter. More inquiries are ongoing,” SP Butoto noted.

The tragic incident has renewed calls for vigilance among road users and stricter enforcement against reckless driving, particularly along busy rural routes.
