Mbale City, Uganda: Kampala-based lawyer, Counsel Paul Mugoya Wanyoto, popularly known as “the man of dollars from Nabweya,” has joined the race to contest for Mbale Northern City Division Parliamentary seat.
Wanyoto joins a crowded race that includes incumbent MP Seth Wambedde, Hajji Umar Nangoli, Hajji Isima Mukakadi, RDC Hudu Hussein all competing for the NRM flag, NUP candidates; Ivan Masaba and Mike Nimeenze and Rabbi Gershom Sizomu Wambedde, among others.
Having previously contested on the Forum for Democratic Change ticket in the last elections, he is expected to officially launch his campaigns as an independent candidate in the coming days.
While declaring his intentions, Wanyoto said, “My aspirations for the Mbale Northern City Division MP seat are now firm. I have prepared thoroughly and learned from the mistakes of previous elections. My focus is on real representation. Many forget the people when they reach Parliament, I won’t.”
According to Bugisu Intellectual Forum, a local platform that tracks political developments in Mbale, he pledged to be an active and responsible Member of Parliament, particularly in scrutinizing and approving the national budget with a focus on addressing key constituency needs such as health, education, water and sanitation, and infrastructure.
Wanyoto has already begun outreach efforts by donating tricycle ambulances to health centers in Namanyonyi and Namakwekwe, refurbishing health facilities, and supporting youth in various fields. He has also promised continued investment in health, education, and sports.
“Since Mbale attained city status, my people have not enjoyed the services they deserve. There is growing frustration due to neglect by their leaders,” he said.
“I feel compelled to advocate for them. I believe I have the qualities of a good leader and, if given the opportunity, I will deliver the leadership Mbale Northern City Division deserves.” Wanyoto said.
Wanyoto’s supporters believe he is blessed, saying the man has dollars, and his financial strength is a key asset in the race. They claim he is not seeking a job, but rather a platform to serve his people.
The entry of Counsel Paul Mugoya Wanyoto back into Mbale politics positions him as a strong challenger in the race, and early signals indicate that the race is going to be heated.
