Vatican City, May 7, 2025: The Catholic Church has entered a pivotal moment as 133 cardinal electors from over 70 countries convene in the Sistine Chapel to begin the conclave that will elect the 267th pope, following the death of Pope Francis on April 21 at the age of 88.
The cardinals, all under the age of 80, have taken a solemn oath of secrecy and are sequestered within the Vatican, surrendering all communication devices to ensure confidentiality during the election process.
The election process requires a two-thirds majority, meaning a candidate must receive at least 89 votes to be elected pope.
Voting will begin with one ballot on the first day, followed by up to four ballots each subsequent day until a new pope is chosen. The outcome of each ballot is signaled to the public by smoke emanating from the Sistine Chapel chimney: black smoke indicates no decision, while white smoke announces the election of a new pope.
Among the leading candidates is Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, known for his diplomatic experience and administrative skills.
Other potential frontrunners include Cardinal Luis Tagle of the Philippines, Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States, and Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline of France.
The diverse backgrounds and perspectives of the electors suggest that the conclave may seek a candidate who can bridge the divide between progressive and conservative factions within the Church.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the dean of the College of Cardinals, emphasized the need for unity and moral leadership in his address before the conclave commenced. He urged his fellow cardinals to elect a pope who would prioritize the spiritual and pastoral needs of the faithful over personal interests.
The new pope will face numerous challenges, including addressing the ongoing clergy abuse crisis, managing internal Church governance, and continuing or reassessing the reforms initiated by Pope Francis, such as increased inclusivity and environmental advocacy.
The global Catholic community of 1.4 billion awaits the outcome of this significant decision.
