Uganda, East Africa: Uganda’s sprint queen Shida Leni is enjoying a red-hot 2025 athletics season, setting new records and sharpening her form ahead of a packed international calendar that could define her legacy.

On April 12, Leni blazed to a new 400m national record of 51.25 seconds at an Athletics Kenya meet in Nairobi, breaking her previous best of 51.47.

Just two weeks later, she clocked a personal best in the 800 metres at the Uganda Athletics Federation’s 5th National Trial on April 26, finishing in 2 minutes 04.4 seconds—over a full second faster than her previous record of 2:05.08.

A traditionally dominant 200m/400m runner, Leni’s leap in middle-distance performance has further cemented her versatility and resilience, attributes credited to her rigorous self-imposed training schedule.

Her next assignment is the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on May 31, where she will again compete in the 400m.

From there, she heads to Europe for more qualifying races as she aims to book her ticket to the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, in September this year.

Beyond Tokyo, Leni is targeting podium success at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games, slated for 7–21 November 2025 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The 2025 season could prove pivotal for Leni, whose dedication and consistent progression signal Uganda’s growing might in global athletics.
