Tech World, Global: Direct Messages (DMs) on X (formerly Twitter) have been rendered unusable for many users across the globe, with the platform experiencing widespread disruptions that began early Thursday and persisted into Friday.
Frustrated users reported encountering repeated “Something went wrong. Try reloading” errors when attempting to access or send DMs, with the issue affecting both mobile apps and desktop browsers.
The malfunction has sparked an avalanche of complaints, with many users tagging platform owner Elon Musk directly in hopes of a swift resolution.
“Elon Musk, please fix the app, I can’t even open messages or DMs, this is horrible,” one user posted, capturing the growing discontent.
Another user reported, “Notifications on DMs but doesn’t show any unread messages,” while others echoed similar frustrations, noting problems accessing their inboxes across devices.
Beyond DMs, the outage appears to be impacting broader functionality on the platform. Users have also reported failures in notifications, retweets, and likes, with some saying their likes disappear instantly or that the app logs them out unexpectedly.
According to outage monitoring site DownDetector, more than 6,000 reports were logged in Uganda by 05 a.m. EAT, indicating a major service disruption.
“I’m done, this app is so s–t right now, where are my notifs? Why are likes immediately undone afterwards? This was never an issue before Musk bought Twitter,” one user fumed. “If y’all wanna message me, do it on Snapchat, Twitter is beyond broken. I’m gone.”
Despite the scale of complaints, no official communication or explanation had been issued by X or its technical team by press time.
The continued technical failures come amid growing criticism of Musk’s leadership since taking over the platform in 2022, with users citing persistent bugs, moderation challenges, and the recent monetization model changes as indicators of decline.
