Uganda’s Auditor General, CPA Edward Akol, has been named a recipient of the prestigious Uganda Development Champions Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the country’s accountability systems, public resource management, and overall commitment to Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The award, conferred by Public Opinions, places CPA Akol among a select group of national leaders set to be inducted into the Uganda Development Champions Journal, an initiative that recognizes individuals whose work aligns with national development priorities and service to the country.
Akol joins a list of high-profile leaders, including Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Gen. Gowa Kasita, Speaker Anita Among, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, First Lady Janet Museveni, businessman Dr. Charles Mbiire, and Gen. Salim Saleh.
Other inductees include nominated ministers, chief administrative officers, CEOs, and senior government officials. President Yoweri Museveni was the first to receive the award in 2022.
As head of the Office of the Auditor General (OAG), Akol has led transformative reforms that have strengthened transparency and accountability in the use of public funds. Under his leadership, the OAG has executed a record number of audits and championed innovations such as the Citizen Feedback Platform and Audit Recommendation Tracking Platform, tools designed to enhance civic engagement and improve service delivery.
In 2023 alone, the OAG completed 3,153 audits, including 2,731 financial and compliance reviews, along with IT, forensic, engineering, and special audits. CPA Akol has also prioritized capacity building through staff training, institutional impartiality, and performance-based recruitment.
Akol’s strong leadership has been critical in spotlighting infrastructural project mismanagement and guiding corrective action through evidence-based audit recommendations.
His long tenure at the OAG, spanning over 30 years, has seen him rise through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as Auditor General by President Museveni in 2024 and subsequent approval by Parliament.
A member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, CPA Akol holds an MBA from Heriot-Watt University in the UK and a Bachelor of Commerce from Makerere University.
