Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: The 2025 CECAFA Women’s Senior Championship will be held from June 12 to 22 in Dar es Salaam, with regional football powerhouse Tanzania confirmed as hosts.
The tournament, organized by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), will feature women’s national teams from across the region. So far, four countries have confirmed participation: Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, and South Sudan, with more expected to join, CECAFA officials revealed.
Yusuf Mossi, CECAFA’s Competitions Director, described the timing of the championship as strategic, designed to help national teams prepare for upcoming continental engagements. “This tournament will serve as vital preparation for Tanzania, who are representing the region at WAFCON,” he noted.
The 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will bring together top teams from across Africa, and Tanzania is among the qualifiers. Meanwhile, other CECAFA nations will use the tournament to fine-tune their squads ahead of the WAFCON 2026 qualifiers set to begin in October.
The last edition of the CECAFA Women’s Senior Championship was held in Uganda from June 1 to 11, 2022, at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru. Uganda’s Crested Cranes emerged champions after defeating Burundi 3–1 in the final.
Sandra Nabweteme netted a brace, Fazila Ikwaput added a third, while Joelle Bukuru scored Burundi’s consolation.
This year’s women’s tournament is part of a packed CECAFA football calendar. In July, the regional body will stage its first-ever CECAFA Beach Soccer Championship, set for July 7 to 12 in Mombasa, Kenya.
Other major events include the CAF Women’s Club Champions League CECAFA qualifiers and the Dar Port Kagame Cup, both to be held in Tanzania in September.
The AFCON U-17 CECAFA qualifiers will take place in Ethiopia in November, while CECAFA school football qualifiers will conclude the year in December.
Notably, the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup and the CECAFA U-20 Women’s Championship will not take place in 2025 due to calendar and logistical constraints.
