Kampala, Uganda: The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has appointed Vipers SC co-head coach Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso of Uganda Hippos to take charge of the Uganda Cranes for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The tournament is scheduled to run from August 2nd to August 30th, 2025, and will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania under the Pamoja East Africa arrangement.
Muhumuza and Byekwaso will work under the supervision of Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put, who will oversee the team’s technical direction throughout the tournament.
Fred Muhumuza, who is currently co-head coach at Vipers SC, recently led the club to a domestic double, securing both the Uganda Premier League title and the Stanbic Uganda Cup. His recent success at the club level makes him a strong candidate to guide the national team during CHAN.
Morley Byekwaso has built a strong reputation at the youth level, notably guiding the Uganda Hippos (U20 national team) to silver medals at the 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2024 African Games.
Despite challenges at the club level, his experience with young talent has been widely recognized.
The two coaches previously worked together in 2023 when they led the Cranes in international friendlies against Mali and Zambia following the departure of former head coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic.
CHAN is a biennial competition exclusive to players who feature in their home country’s domestic leagues. Uganda will be participating in the tournament for the seventh time, having featured in the 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022 editions.
Uganda has never gone past the group stages in previous CHAN tournaments, and the upcoming edition presents another opportunity for improvement, especially with home advantage.
Additional technical staff will be announced later alongside the official squad list.
