Cartoonist Jim Spire mourns shocking death of brother John Kiggundu

The late Dr. John Spire Kiggundu, founder of Henrob Hospital and brother to cartoonist Jim Spire, will be laid to rest in Butozi, Masaka, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

Kampala, Uganda: Ugandans are mourning the mysterious death of Dr. John Spire Kiggundu, a celebrated gynecologist and fertility specialist, who was found dead at a guest house under circumstances that remain under investigation.

Dr. Kiggundu, the brother of renowned cartoonist and social critic Jim Spire Ssentongo, was the founder and lead specialist at Henrob Hospital in Zana. He was widely known for his compassionate care, particularly in the fields of gynecology, pelvic endoscopy, and endometriosis treatment.

Preliminary reports suggest he may have been murdered, though official investigations by the authorities are still ongoing.

Dr Jim Spire, in a post via his official X account, expressed profound grief over the tragic loss og his brother, saying the death of his brother had left him “in a big hole,” describing him not only as a sibling but as a father figure.

“John, no please! If it had taken a fight, I would have offered myself in your place… With your selfless desire to treat and save the lives of others, you got no treatment. John! Does death know?” he wrote in a deeply emotional post.

Friends, former patients, and colleagues have poured tributes across platforms, describing Dr. Kiggundu as a rare gem in Uganda’s medical profession, gentle, skilled, and devoted to patient care.

Many Ugandans have taken to social media to express shock and pay tribute to the deceased doctor, with many describing him as “compassionate, humble, and deeply committed to his profession.”

According to the official burial programme released by the family, Kiggundu’s funeral starts today, Monday, June 23, 2025, with a Requiem Mass at St. Joseph Lweza Parish at 1:00 pm. This will be followed by a night vigil at his home in Zana.

On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the remains of Dr Kiggundu will be transported to his ancestral home in Butozi–Masaka, where another vigil will be held, ahead of his burial and final send-off on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

Police were yet to release an official postmortem or confirm details of the scene where the body was recovered. However, sources close to the family say foul play is strongly suspected.

As investigations continue, the public has called on authorities to expedite the probe and bring clarity and justice to a case that has left a void in both the medical and creative communities of Uganda.
