Five killed after car plunges into trench in Buyende

The wreckage of the Toyota Harrier that plunged into a trench, killing five occupants on the spot in Buyende District.

Buyende, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Buyende District are investigating the circumstances under which five people perished in a fatal road crash after a vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into a water-logged trench along the Kamuli–Irundu road on Saturday night.

The victims, travelling in a Toyota Harrier registration number UBD 160F, died instantly when the vehicle lost control at a raised section of the road near Buyumba at around 8:00 PM.

Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha confirmed the incident in a statement released Sunday morning, identifying the deceased as: Sebuliba Masudi, 32, Mua Ayubu, 29, Ben Ndikola, 24, all from Kaliro, Wamuseke Wilberforce, 31, from Gumpi, and Evelyn Kyalisima, 25, from Lyantonde District.

According to preliminary investigations, the group was returning from Iyingo Landing Site and is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol when the crash happened.

Upon reaching a narrow, raised stretch of the road with trenches on both sides, the driver lost control, and the vehicle overturned into the water, killing all occupants.

“The victims were allegedly intoxicated. The road section was water-logged and slightly elevated. The driver failed to manoeuvre it and the car overturned into a trench,” ASP Kasadha said.

Police from Kagulu visited the scene, documented evidence, and transported the bodies for postmortem. The wreckage of the vehicle was towed and parked at Kagulu Police Station pending inspection.

No arrests have been made so far, but police say inquiries are ongoing to establish additional facts.

“We strongly caution the public against drunk driving. This reckless behaviour continues to claim lives and endanger all road users,” Kasadha added.
