Kampala, Uganda: Musician and politician Eddy Yawe has expressed concern over Uganda’s current political trajectory, accusing leaders of prioritizing positions and personal gain over meaningful transformation.
Yawe, a veteran opposition figure and elder brother to National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), says the country’s leadership culture is being eroded by a fixation on power and wealth.
“Wherever we are headed, it won’t be easy. Are we looking for real change or just positions?” Yawe questioned, in a statement shared via his socials this week.
Although Yawe has contested for parliamentary seats multiple times without success, he remains an active voice in Uganda’s opposition. He said his alignment with Bobi Wine’s political movement was born out of shared convictions and the hope for genuine reform, not opportunism.
However, Yawe now fears that many politicians—both seasoned and new—are abandoning the mission for personal ambition.
“People are doing anything to build successful political careers. The focus has shifted from public service to greed,” he added.
As someone who claims to understand the daily struggles of Uganda’s underprivileged, Yawe urged political players to reconnect with the needs of ordinary citizens.
