Kampala, Uganda: Former Kawempe South MP Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa Sserunga has blamed Uganda’s opposition leaders for abandoning the broader political struggle in favour of securing their personal interests and clinging to positions.

Speaking in a candid media interview, the outspoken former legislator said opposition politics in Uganda has become hollow and performative, centered more on preserving individual power than advancing meaningful democratic change.

“The problem we have in the opposition now is that the leaders have abandoned the general struggle and are now focused on protecting their positions. All they think about is what benefits them as people and their families,” Hon. Munyagwa stated.

Munyagwa, who previously belonged to the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) before joining other platforms in protest over party fragmentation, noted that although many opposition leaders speak the language of unity and liberation, their actions show the opposite.

He accused several party presidents and Members of Parliament of overstaying their welcome in office, insisting that the culture of ‘entitlement to leadership’ is undermining the spirit of generational renewal and progress within opposition ranks.

“They are not willing to let new leaders emerge. Most of our MPs in opposition have been in Parliament for over 15 years and still want to continue. Yet, they have done nothing substantial while in those positions,” he added.

Munyagwa’s remarks come at a time when the opposition is already divided across several factions, with internal party conflicts plaguing the FDC, NUP, and other political formations.

His comments echo growing public concerns that the Ugandan opposition is increasingly resembling the very system it seeks to challenge, closed, rigid, and self-preserving.
