‘Stop looking for hit songs, do quality music’ – Spice Diana to fellow artistes

Singer Spice Diana (pictured) says established artistes should focus on releasing quality music rather than chasing hit songs.

Kampala, Uganda: Renowned Ugandan female singer Namukwaya Hajjara, popularly known as Spice Diana, has called on established musicians to shift their focus from constantly chasing hit songs to producing quality music that sustains their brand and artistic identity.

Speaking candidly about the music industry in Uganda, Spice Diana, popular for hit songs such as Siri Regular, Jangu Ondabe, Osanula, among others, advised veteran performers to embrace their influence and reputation, rather than desperately seeking chart-toppers to remain relevant.

“Established artists should stop looking for hit songs,” Spice Diana said. “They are the best and that should be the driving force for them at this moment—not to just release hit songs, but good quality songs.”

The singer argued that while hit singles might dominate airwaves and attract short-term attention, they shouldn’t define the essence of an artiste’s brand or talent. “Hits shouldn’t be what defines an artiste or what they’re able to do at some point. Musicians that are talented should remain the way they are and be appreciated just like that,” she added.

In Uganda, artists with recent hits often secure more bookings and visibility, overshadowing veteran musicians who may not be trending but still boast deep catalogues of timeless music. Spice Diana’s comments challenge this trend and call for a renewed appreciation of musical artistry beyond viral success.

Spice Diana’s remarks come amid a vibrant Ugandan music scene where many artistes struggle to sustain long-term careers despite early success. Her advice highlights the importance of consistency, authenticity, and quality in music production as key to lasting success.
