Kanungu, Uganda: Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 2 Infantry Division, has kicked off a strategic mobilisation and readiness inspection tour across units under the 307 Infantry Brigade in Kanungu District.

The tour, which began at the 19th Battalion headquarters within Queen Elizabeth National Park, is focused on four key security pillars; border protection along the volatile Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), inter-agency coordination for national park safety, troop discipline, and election preparedness ahead of the 2026 general polls.

“These are routine visits to check on the operational readiness of our troops in their areas of responsibility. They offer an opportunity for direct interaction with unit commanders and personnel, and provide on-spot assessments of how units are executing their tasks,” said Maj Gen Muhanguzi while addressing officers at the 19 Battalion.

He commended UPDF soldiers in the area for their vigilance in safeguarding Uganda’s western frontier and for effective collaboration with civilian agencies, especially the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), to protect endangered wildlife and promote tourism.

Maj Gen Muhanguzi also underscored the importance of maintaining ideological clarity and discipline among the troops, reminding them of the UPDF’s foundational principles—patriotism, selflessness, and professionalism. He urged personnel to avoid distractions, stay physically fit, and protect themselves against diseases like HIV/AIDS.

“As we approach the electoral season, remember that the UPDF is a non-partisan force. Our duty is to protect all Ugandans and uphold peace,” he reminded the troops.

The 307 Infantry Brigade covers a highly strategic area bordering the DRC and encompassing key national assets like Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest national parks, the Rweshama fishing zone on Lake Edward, major aerodromes, and industrial infrastructure vital to Uganda’s economy.

He also stressed the value of financial literacy, encouraging soldiers to engage in disciplined saving and planning for their future through SACCOs and army-run financial schemes.

Maj Gen Muhanguzi is expected to continue his tour at the 23 Battalion and conclude with a high-level engagement at Mburamizi Brigade headquarters, where he will meet brigade commanders and review strategic operational updates.
