Kampala, Uganda: The Uganda Police Force has confirmed holding in custody two prime suspects believed to be behind a string of violent robberies that terrorized Kisoro District in recent months.

Speaking to journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday, June 30, Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma confirmed the arrests of Irankunda Gerald, also known as Ndereya, and Habyarimana Vallence during coordinated operations in Karumena and Kisoro Hill villages.

“On June 27, 2025, an operation resulted in the arrest of two prime suspects, Irankunda Gerald alias Ndereya and Habyarimana Vallence, from Karumena and Kisoro Hill villages in Kisoro District, respectively,” ACP Rusoke stated.

“Following his arrest, Irankunda Gerald led the police team to Kisoro Hill village, where he had concealed an AK-47 firearm along with one magazine, one live round of ammunition, a pair of police khaki trousers, and a pair of suspected police jungle boots,” he added, confirming that “these items were promptly recovered by the Police.”

During interrogation, police say, Irankunda confessed to involvement in at least four armed robberies across Kisoro District, including incidents in Mugombero Town Center, Natate, and Mutorole. These cases are registered under Kisoro CRBs 303/2025, 304/2025, 381/2025, and 402/2025.

Further investigations also revealed that Irankunda had previously escaped from lawful custody at Ruti Police Station in Mbarara District while under interrogation by the Flying Squad Unit, following an earlier arrest in Kisoro.

“He disclosed that he committed these robberies alongside Habyarimana Vallence, a Rwandese national, and Anthony Imanirakiza, who had already been apprehended by members of the public and handed over to Kisoro Police,” ACP Rusoke explained.

The Police spokesperson said additional accomplices remain at large, and efforts are underway to track them down. “We call upon the public to remain vigilant and share any information that can aid in apprehending the remaining suspects,” he urged.
