Kampala, Uganda: Three suspected armed robbers were shot dead by police in a high-stakes chase and exchange of gunfire that erupted on Saturday evening as security forces responded to an attempted mobile money robbery attack in Lungujja, Rubaga Division, Kampala City.
According to Uganda Police Spokesperson, ACP Rusoke Kituuma, the confrontation unfolded on June 28, 2025, at around 8:00 PM, when officers on routine patrol from Nateete Police Station heard a man crying for help as thugs attempted to rob him at a roadside mobile money kiosk.
“On the evening of June 28, 2025, at around 8:00 PM, police officers from Nateete Police Station were conducting their routine patrol in Lungujja, located within Mengo, Rubaga Division, Kampala City. During their patrol, the officers heard a man raising an alarm from a roadside mobile money shop, desperately calling for help as thieves were attempting to rob him of his money,” ACP Kituuma said while addressing journalists at Naguru Police Headquarters on Monday.
The officers, he said, quickly intervened and found the victim locked in a violent struggle with the suspects over a small black bag containing cash. “As the area Officer in Charge (OC) attempted to apprehend one of the suspects, another pulled out a panga (machete), prompting one of the officers to fire a warning shot into the air. Startled by the gunfire, the suspects fled the scene,” he explained.
“The police motorcycle squad chased the suspects up to Mengo Stabex fuel station. There, the officers engaged the robbers in a shootout that left two suspects neutralized instantly. A third suspect sustained injuries and died en route to Mulago Hospital,” Kituuma noted, adding that two other suspects managed to escape the scene on a numberless motorcycle and remain at large.
At the scene, Kituuma said, police recovered several exhibits, including a bag containing UGX 8,435,000, two transaction mobile phones (MTN and Airtel), the victim’s National Identity Card, and his house keys from the suspects.
The officers also recovered two motorcycles, one with registration number UGE 294X (a maroon Haojue) and another numberless Haojue, along with two pangas used in the attempted robbery.
Police commended the swift response of the officers involved, saying their action prevented the loss of life and safeguarded citizens’ property. “Our teams are actively pursuing the remaining suspects who escaped. We will not relent in dismantling criminal gangs that terrorize the public,” Kituuma emphasized.
This incident is the latest in a string of violent robberies targeting mobile money agents in Kampala, sparking renewed calls for heightened community vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities.
